The purpose of the D.A.R.E.
program is to supply students with a myriad of information to help
them recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that
may influence students to experiment with alcohol, tobacco,
marijuana, inhalants or other drugs that they will undoubtedly come
to face as they go through life. The program has recently updated
its curriculum to include information regarding the increasing
violence among students and ways to deal with these tendencies among
themselves and with others.
Some of the long term goals of the D.A.R.E.
program are; A reduction in the supply of controlled substance as a
result of reduced demand. A more positive identification with police
officers. Improved decision making in all life situations. An over
all reduction in criminal activity.
In the Town of Poughkeepsie over six thousand children have received
the elementary core curriculum. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police
Department is responsible for providing the
D.A.R.E. program to six public elementary schools and
two private schools. The town police have offered this program for
over ten years.
Additionally, the Town of Poughkeepsie
D.A.R.E. officer serves on numerous school boards and
panels. He also is a member of, and speaks at several civic
organizations.
Through the D.A.R.E. program, and many others, the Town of
Poughkeepsie Police is proactively serving the communi ty with
preventative measures to crime. Responding to the need for such
programs is crucial to the well being of a community.
The Town of Poughkeepsie D.A.R.E.
