Juvenile Aid Bureau

A Detective Sergeant, two Detectives, and a civilian Youth Aide
staff the Juvenile Aid Bureau. The goal of the Town of Poughkeepsie
Police Department Juvenile Aid Bureau is to work with various local
agencies, schools, and the community to provide a safe and healthy
environment for the young people of the Town of Poughkeepsie, and to
prevent youths from entering the adult criminal justice system.
The Juvenile Aid Bureau's responsibilities are numerous and varied.
The JAB handles crimes that have been committed by persons less than
16 years of age, as well as crimes with juvenile victims.
Investigations are also conducted where child abuse is suspected, or
where a child's welfare may be at risk. The JAB works closely with
agencies such as Dutchess County Child Protective Services, Dutchess
County Youth Services, The Dutchess County Attorney’s Office,
Dutchess County Probation, and the Shoplifter's Alternative
organization. The JAB also provides educational programs for youths,
such as Halloween Safety, and Child ID program.
One of the most frequent questions we hear from parents is, what
can I do about a child that won’t behave or listen to me?
First and foremost don't give up! Being a parent today is one of the
toughest jobs around. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department
J.A.B. offers a number of resources and referrals for parents
seeking assistance with delinquent and pre-delinquent children. Each
of these programs is described in greater detail below.
The J.A.B. is dedicated to promoting and ensuring the safety,
education and welfare of all young people throughout the Town. It is
our hope that the resources we have included will provide you with
the assistance often needed when dealing with young people who
demonstrate serious acts of social misconduct.
