The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department recognizes the importance of continual professional training. Officers exposed to frequent training are enabled opportunities to serve their community better. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department’s Training and Accreditation Unit is designed to ensure this ideal.

The Training and Accreditation Unit assures the planning and development of recruit orientation training and makes sure that newly promoted personnel receive job-related training prior to, or within one year of promotion.

The Training and Accreditation Unit monitors and coordinates the completion of mandatory annual retraining of all sworn personnel by assuring attendance at approved training courses. The Training and Accreditation Unit further coordinates the registration and travel arrangements for employees approved to attend advanced training.

Interagency training is an integral part of improved response to community needs. The Training and Accreditation Unit serves as liaison to local, regional, and state training centers, as well as area colleges and universities.

The Training and Accreditation Unit has the additional responsibility of coordinating the accreditation process for the department to ensure compliance with New York State DCJS Office of Public Safety accreditation standards. The Training and Accreditation Unit also maintains files for proof of compliance with New York State DCJS Office of Public Safety accreditation standards and ensures orientation training concerning the accreditation process is provided to all department members. The department has been accredited since March 1, 2011.
